Our family of 4 (2 kids aged 11 and 13) are coming to Zermatt for 10 days next January. We want somewhere reasonably priced, not too far to lifts or bus stops, with a nice atmosphere. Both these places look good and not too expensive.
I would appreciate any advice or recommendations for other places. I was last in Zermatt about 25 years ago - is it true that Maccas has invaded?

both hotels are good quality - the bella vista is older. but recently renovated while hotel welschen is newer. hotel welschen is right above the sunnegga lift - you'll be able to ski right to the lift. there's a bus stop right there too so you'll have easy access to the gornergrat bahn and/or matterhorn bahn. the bella vista is centrally located, but you're further away from the lifts and the nearest bus-stop is maybe 200 metres away.

Maccas is McDonalds - please tell me they are not in Zermatt!! I am still waiting for the Hotel Welschen to get back to me, so I will see what they can offer. The Bella Vista does look very nice on their website and they have a family room which makes it much more reasonable.

ummm..., when you arrive in zermatt and stroll just 30 metres up the main street, you will be warmly greeted by the familiar sign and 'aroma' of yes, mcdonald's... but my kids eat there so i can't really complain...

actually, if you're here in january and there's snow in the village, which there will be, you'll be able to ski down the street from the hotel to the bus-stop, hop on the bus and be at any of the bahns within minutes and when you ski at sunnegga/rothorn area, you'll be able to ski right back to the door-step of the bella vista, have a cup of tea, a warm bath, etc., before you send the little ones out for a big mac and stuff

Can I ask you another question - do you know the Haus Matterhorngruss - it has a few apartments and seems to be operated by a couple of families - it is in the direction of the Kleine Matterhorn lifts.
Also, to cure your kids of the big M, show them the doco Supersize Me - it worked for my kids - and never let them have a chicken nugget, please!

yes, i know the matterhorngruss apartment - very nice place in the steinmatte area of zermatt, run by very nice people (perren family). the bus stop is sbout 100 metres away and the klein matterhorn station is about 500 metres away so it's not a long hike

i want to see that mcdonald's documentary - have heard about it and heard it's pretty gruesome - will have the kids watch with a bag of bio- (and stomach) friendly popcorn

Hotel Bella Vista will give us 10 nights accommodation, unlike some of the others that will only take Saturday to Saturday. Thanks for all your advice and I may be in contact again closer to our departure time.
I hope the snow comes earlier this year!
